He said what?????

My son said what? We don't talk like that home! Are you sure that's what he really said? May he meant something else and it just sounded like a bad word....Um...#crickets…..

What and how do you approach the parent of the kiddo in your class who has a mouth equivalent of a truck driver! Not just a mouth but, one who can cuss the wallpaper off the wall....hmmm....well, there is only one thing to do. BE honest.

Don't sugar coat the problem.

Don't laugh at the problem or make light of it.

Do not disregard the behavior in front of your students.

While the behavior obviously comes from someone the child has heard (or perhaps unsupervised television/screen time), it is not the child's fault he or she has been able to be unsupervised in these scenarios. What you should make the child aware of, immediately ,is the inappropriate use of the words he has heard.

As a teacher it is your job to communicate positive language in your learning environments, correcting negative behavior with positive options and communicating with the supervising adult/caregiver of your student when this behavior happens.

What are some of the ways you have handled this behavior in your classroom?
